Apple Cider Vinegar History
ACV dates back to 400BC to the time of Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, where it was mixed with honey, as an energising tonic and a healing elixir. it is still regarded as one today too.
Including Apple Cider in your life is not a new thing it’s been around since olden times, but has had lots of hype about the health and wellness scene and Hollywood for being a miracle cure.
Promoted by top models and celebs who swear by it taking two tablespoons of the raw apple cider vinegar twice a day has gotten it well known as a superfood.
What is ACV?
Apple cider vinegar is made from whole apples and not pasteurized or filtered. It contains all these nutrients, enzymes and organic acids produced during the two fermentations needed to make the vinegar. I’ve found ACV a staple in my home remedy cupboard, it’s easy to find, easy to use and best of all-natural!
How can I use it?
1. Weight Loss
Have you heard about how it can help with weight loss? Well when taken before, as it helps you feel satisfied/full more quickly, meaning you’ll probably eat less.
Natural sour/bitter flavours stimulate the liver and increase intestinal muscle contractions, meaning your food moves more quickly through your GI tract, thus increasing your metabolism.
I add 1 TBS of this to a pint of water and sip on it all day and I find it helps to decrease bloating and does seem to help decrease my sugar cravings. I also occasionally add 1 TBS to my juices or salad dressings as love the tangy zing.
At first, I thought the taste was a bit much and over time I actually love the taste. If you find this too use a little and slowly built up how much you have. So, for example, add 1/2 teaspoon to a glass of water and then build it up to 1 tablespoon.
It is best to have a drink with apple cider 1 hour to 45mins before a meal. Not only can this help you it can help you absorb more nutrients from food, but studies have found that consuming apple cider vinegar before meals reduce the blood glucose levels.
2. Toner and rashes
Apple cider vinegar is great for reducing inflammation and when I’m stressed, eaten too much sugar, my body always tells me.
I will feel bloated, have a flare-up of eczema or get pimples on my face. Oh i also use it on insect bites to stop the itching.
When this happens, I have some apple cider vinegar in water or add some to a cotton pad and rub it over the spots.
Magically after a good sleep, it’s almost gone and I’m not bloated. It’s seriously awesome to use as a toner on your T-zone or other dry spots. It will help to prevent breakouts and minimise blemishes.
Scarlett Johansson swears by this trick! But be warned the smell can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. So it must be good right?
3. Cooking with apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a very versatile ingredient, because not only is it good for you it can deepen flavours of numerous foods.
Like when you make homemade chilli sauce or need a spicy tangy salad dressing.
In my recipe book, I even use it in my chocolate cake recipe.
As mentioned above Hippocrates mixed with honey to make a supertonic. Below is my super tonic recipe and also a fire vinegar recipe everyone seems to love!
Apple cider vinegar energizing tonic recipe
- 2 Tbsp ACV
- 750ml of sparkling water
- 1 TBS tsp honey (add more if you like it sweeter)
- 1 tsp cinnamon powder
- 1 freshly squeezed
- for an extra kick, you can also add a dash of cayenne powder
Mix together, cut up cucumber slices and add in some mint (hello afternoon spritzer), this is so refreshing and great when having friends over.
Where do I get ACV from?
Many commercial kinds of apple cider vinegar have been pasteurized, filtered and refined/ distilled.
Make sure you read the labels!
Sellers do this in order to make the product look good so it’s more appealing (like the perfect tasteless carrots you get from the supermarket).
The extra processing destroys many of the health benefits. So you should look out for ACV that is made from cold pressed, organically grown whole apples.
You know I love supporting organically grown food as you’re not ingesting extra chemicals, pesticides or preservatives.
