Why blackberries?

Anthocyanins are an antioxidant shown to reduce inflammation amongst other things and give blackberries their dark color. Research has also shown that the ellagic acid in blackberries may have anti-cancer properties as well vitamin C to help digestion, your immune system and skin health. Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring plant estrogens also found in blackberries, as a women this can help to relieve common symptoms of PMS and even menopausal symptoms including hot flashes. So next time you see a blackberry bush stop, say thank you, eat a few, take some home and appreciated the goodness that is nature!

Tried and tested… Blackberry smoothie

So with that out of the way lets have some delicious fun! You can use any berry you want for this smoothie, but I particularly like the rich purple colour my smoothie gets from blackberries and have this as a pre/post gym workout treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup coconut/almond/hazelnut/ milk
  • 1TBS almond butter
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 – 1 cup blackberries
  • pinch cinnamon

Additional – as I use it before or after the gym

  • I like to add One World Whey protein powder
  • You can also add stevia, honey or maple syrup if its not sweet enough for you

Blitz all ingredients together in the blender until creamy and smoothie consistency.

Smoothie tip

I like to freeze my bananas and berries, so when blended it becomes like a cold milkshake without the additives and preservatives, only natural goodness. Enjoy!
