My slow cooker has been a must-have kitchen item, especially if you’re doing a Paleo diet as it saves you time and money. This bone broth recipe is really good if you have a big family to feed, as you can buy the cheaper organic cuts of meats, preparation is easy and you leave it for hours to do it’s thing.

Broth and stock are essentially the same thing to me and they both are high in minerals for the body and made by boiling the bones of healthy animals (make sure they are grass fed) with vegetables, herbs and spices.

I remember my grandma would always have some type of broth or soup for us to eat to ‘keep up our strength’ she would say (what a wise and amazing women she was).

Today if you went into the kitchen of any 5-star restaurant there would be a large stock pot simmering away, as good broth is a key ingredient to many dishes and has so many culinary uses.

Besides its amazing taste and culinary uses, bone broth is an excellent source of minerals and is known to boost the immune system and help improve your digestion process (probably why people always want chicken soup when they are sick?).

Bone Broths are high calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which make it great for bone and tooth health. As it contains all of this goodness bone broths help to support joints, hair, skin, and nails due to its high collagen content.

Bone broth in the kitchen recipe

A simple bone broth recipe


  • 2 carrots, chopped medium
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped medium
  • 1 medium onion, chopped medium
  • 7 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 3.5 lb of grass fed beef bones
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Himalayan Rock salt
  • Pepper
  • 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • Water
  • 1 TBSP Coconut oil
  • Seasonal herbs (I like using cumin, sage and thyme)
What to do:

It’s important to buy high quality grass fed bones so your broth will have a high mineral content. If you have a roast chicken save the carcass as you can use that instead of beef bones.

You can grill the bones in the oven for 30mins if you want a more richer flavour or just use them as they are which is what I like to do.

Firstly add your bones in spring water to the slow cooker with the apple cider vinegar leave aside for an hour. By doing this the ACV will help the bones to release minerals into your broth.

Next cut all the vegetables and fry for 2-3 mins in a pan with coconut oil, it’s should have a shiny colour, then turn the heat off and mix in the herbs. Then add this to the slow cooker with your bones and let it cook on high for 1 hours and then turn down and let it slow cook overnight.

I like to do this the night before so it’s ready the next day. I use a strainer to filter the bits and let it cool down to scrape off the fat on top. You can keep for a few days or freeze portions for when you feel like broth. It’s like drinking a soup and great on a cold winter’s day.
