The best treats are those made from quality natural ingredients, as not only does it taste better, but you don’t get any nasty side effects from eating cheap processed sugary junk foods. I use to eat cheap 40p chocolate bars from the vending machine, or get a piece of cake/brownie with my coffee, especially after having a meal as I always craved something sweet (sound familiar?). I also used to feel bloated, irritated if I was hungry, overly full after I had indulged and would often sugar crash (again sound familiar?).

These days a treat is a treat, I savour every bite and because the ingredients used are normally so rich and full of flavour, one piece is enough and really hits the spot. One of my favourite treats is a slice of brownie. I’ve tried out a few recipes to bring you the best! This first test is what I like to call the ‘Original Brownie’, it’s so dense, full of flavour, goodness and great if you want to impress your friends. I tested these out on people who have healthy diets and also those that don’t and the feedback was 100% brownie satisfaction guaranteed!




  • 225 grams dark chocolate (minimum 70% dark)
  • 225 grams grass fed butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup coconut sugar
  • 4 large eggs (beaten lightly before adding in)
  • 1 ½ cups coconut, almond or gluten free flour
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • handful of cacao nibs
  • handful of rasins if you want it a bit sweeter

  • Preheat the oven to 170°C/gas mark 3/325ºF. Melt the chocolate and butter gently over a low heat in a large saucepan. Take off the heat, mix in the vanilla and sugar, and let it cool a little.
  • Add eggs into the pan along with your flour, chopped walnuts and cacao nibs. Pour into a greased baking tin.
  • Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes (depending on how gooey you like your brownies). When cool, cut into squares. Eat and enjoy, as they won’t last long!

Why is this brownie recipe better for you?

It’s the quality of the ingredients, like in all cooking. The main ingredient in this deliciously rich brownie would be nothing without good quality dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is loaded with nutrients that can positively affect your health. It might be more expensive, than cheap dairy milk, but is loaded with fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese and a few other minerals. Using more nutritious ingredients means it will cost you more to make these brownies, but you tend to eat less and it also makes them a treat! In today’s society of fast, cheap foods and snacks it’s easy to down cheap sugary treats without thinking about the effects it has on your health and mind. I like the process and effort that goes into making something wholesome and it makes me think about what I’m consuming, I know what’s in it. Bottom line is you and others will be able to taste the goodness!
